History of St. Dominic Church

St. Dominic Catholic Church in Adweso, Koforidua, traces its origins to the late 1970s, when Catholic parishioners living in Adweso had to travel long distances to St. George Parish for Mass and other religious activities. Recognizing this challenge, Rev. Fr. Hans instructed the Legionnaires to conduct a census, assisted by Mr. Peter Kumador, to determine the number of Catholics in the area. The results were encouraging, leading to efforts to establish a local congregation.

Early meetings were held at the home of Mr. J.K. Okyere, initially hosted in the hall of his tenant, Mr. Owusu Ayerebi-Acquah. When Mr. Acquah was transferred, Mr. Okyere continued to support the congregation, allowing them to use his residence and tennis court as the numbers grew. Priests started visiting the congregation, including Fr. Numoh, Fr. Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, and Fr. Thomas Anokyi Danso. A house-to-house approach was sometimes used for Mass, with hosts including Madam Christiana Kokugah. Over time, the congregation secured land for a permanent church.

The first Priest-in-Charge was Fr. Anokyi Danso, assisted by Fr. Alfred Attah-Eshun and Fr. Twum-Barimah. Mr. Adom served as the first Parish Chairperson, followed by Mr. Aferi, a bank manager at SGSSB. In 1979, the foundation stone for the current church building was laid. Bishop Andoh later inaugurated the new church and celebrated Mass there. Over the years, the parish has grown and evolved, playing a vital role in the spiritual and communal life of Catholics living in and around Adweso.

The church has served  as a parish in the diocese since 2001  and has outstations at Agavenya, Okorase, Tinkong, Behenase, Asuoyaa, Nyamebekyere and Mangoase.
