Understanding the Holy Mass: Our Divine Liturgy

The Catholic Liturgy is not just a set of rituals; it is a "public work" (leitourgia) where we participate in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Mass is divided into two main parts that form one single act of worship.

Liturgical Colors & Seasons

The atmosphere of St. Dominic’s changes with the Church calendar.

Look at the Priest’s vestments to know the season:

Green: Ordinary Time (Growth and hope).
Purple: Advent and Lent (Penance and preparation).
White/Gold: Christmas and Easter (Joy and victory).
Red: Feasts of Martyrs and the Holy Spirit (Passion and fire).

1. The Introductory Rites

We gather as one body, leaving the world behind to enter into the presence of God.

Entrance Procession & Chant: We stand to signify our journey toward God.
Penitential Act: We acknowledge our sins (The Confiteor) and ask for God’s mercy (Kyrie Eleison).
The Gloria: A hymn of praise used on Sundays and Solemnities (outside of Advent and Lent).
The Collect: The opening prayer where the Priest "collects" our individual intentions into one.

2. The Liturgy of the Word

God speaks to His people through the Holy Scriptures.

First Reading: Usually from the Old Testament, reflecting God’s promises.
Responsorial Psalm: Our musical response to God's Word.
Second Reading: From the New Testament Epistles (Letters).
The Gospel: The high point of the Word. We stand and trace the Sign of the Cross on our forehead, lips, and heart.
The Homily: The Priest or Deacon breaks open the Word for our daily lives.
The Creed & Universal Prayer: We profess our faith and pray for the needs of the Church and the world.

3. The Liturgy of the Eucharist

The center of our faith: the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ.

Offertory: We present the gifts of bread, wine, and our tithes.
The Eucharistic Prayer: This includes the Consecration, where the Priest repeats the words of Jesus at the Last Supper.
The Lord’s Prayer: We pray the "Our Father" together as a community.
The Lamb of God (Agnus Dei): We acknowledge Jesus who takes away the sins of the world.
Holy Communion: The faithful receive the Real Presence of Christ. Non-Catholics are invited to come forward with arms crossed over their chest for a blessing.

4. The Concluding Rites

We are not just "dismissed"; we are sent on a mission.

Final Blessing: The Priest blesses the congregation.
The Dismissal: "Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life." We leave the church to be the hands and feet of Christ in Adweso.
